Voters discontinue two levies for Elmwood Schools

Voters turned down two levies for Elmwood Schools Tuesday.

School Superintendent Tony Burton says they can't function without the $1.5 million the levy would have generated, or 13 percent of the district's annual operating budget.

The income tax levies weren't new – they've been around since the 1990s, but voters in the five towns Elmwood students come from decided against continuing them.

The district just received an excellent rating on their state report card, but Burton warns if people decide to stop supporting the schools, that rating could disappear.

"A million and a half dollars in cuts – that's a lot of staff, a lot of bussing, a lot of sports," he said. "We have to make decisions on what we can do without if the money is not renewed."

Burton recommends putting the levy back on the ballot, but this time, allowing voters the option of renewing it every five years.
