NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The Northwood Schools Superintendent says all of the schools are in need of an upgrade, and now the district is one step closer to making it happen.
The district's Facilities Commission has recommended to build a brand new pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade, and that has parents excited.
Northwood High School is the newest building in the district, and it's 50 years old. Their elementary was built in 1939.
"I think it's time we invest in new schools," said Pat Jacobs.
The district is hoping to partner with the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission to build a new elementary, middle school, and partially renovate the high school. It's estimated to cost $30 million.
"Two of my kids go here and they love it, so if they could get a new school that would be awesome," said Casey Sakac.
District officials are hoping that enthusiasm lasts, because 65 percent of the cost would have to be raised locally. The district may ask voters for support, but parents say they'll answer the call to update.
"It gets very hot in here, because they don't have the air conditioning," Sakac said. "So new air conditioning would be great for the kids."
And some think new schools would bring more to the community, as well.
"Hopefully we can get more houses built," Jacobs said. "We're just losing the businesses around here. It would be nice to get more businesses in."
The board of education is expected to weigh in on the proposal before June.
