Frontier Airlines takes off at CVG

Posted: Updated:
HEBRON, KY (FOX19) -

Beginning Friday, Frontier Airlines is flying passengers non-stop to its hub in Denver, Colorado with flights starting as low as $99 for passengers who purchased tickets on or before Feb. 2, 2013.

Frontier is the first low-cost airline at CVG in 15 years.

First passengers departed at 6:15 a.m. with much fanfare, including an early-morning party complete with music, balloons and a free breakfast for passengers. The Cincinnati Zoo was on hand with animals to fit Frontier's universally-recognized wildlife theme. All of the company's planes feature a picture of an animal on the aircraft's tail.

The initial flight also featured a water cannon salute, where plumes of water will be shot over the plane, forming water arches. Water salutes are often used to mark the first or last flight of an airline, the retirement of a senior pilot or air traffic controller or for other notable aviation events.

Effective May 16, 2013, Frontier is consolidating its southwestern Ohio area operations at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Service to Dayton International Airport ends on this date.

The new service to Denver joins Frontier's existing nonstop service operated in partnership with Apple Vacations from Cincinnati to Cancun, Mexico, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Frontier's one daily flight to Denver – departing CVG at 6:15 a.m. and returning at 11:35 p.m. – is expected to have a $16 million annual economic impact on the region.

Frontier will offer six weekly non-stop flights out of CVG.
