One of the Montgomery Central High School cheerleaders injured in a crash last week has been released from the hospital, but the other teen remains in the care of doctors.
Kylie Eastin, 17, was discharged from Vanderbilt Medical Center on Saturday, but Ashley Travis, 15, remains in critical condition.
The girls were involved in a head-on wreck Thursday morning with a driver who was later cited with driving under the influence.
"It's very sad, and we're very concerned. And our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the two girls, of course," said Elise Shelton, spokeswoman for Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools.
The most recent message on Kylie's Twitter page, posted Thursday morning, reads: "Today is my last day of high school ever. Bittersweet."
Now, classmates of the Montgomery Central cheerleaders have banded together, hurting, hoping for their recovery.
Classmates gathered for a prayer vigil in the teens' honor Friday evening at Church of the Nazarene.
"Some of the students themselves have initiated prayer vigils and are giving themselves support. I know they want to be with Ashley and Kylie and stand by them as well," Shelton said.
According to a report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the girls were traveling on Highway 48 when a car driven by Roni Proctor, 26, of Cumberland Furnace, TN, drifted across the center lane and hit the girls' vehicle head-on.
Proctor has been cited with DUI, vehicular assault and failure to maintain her lane of travel.
"These two girls are popular girls and are cheerleaders, and they're very well-known at the school and a lot of students feel close to them," Shelton said.
The teens are also very involved at the American Twisters Tumbling Gym, where owner Brooke Meeker calls both girls good role models for young athletes.
Now, classmates and members of the gym are hoping to see Ashley back home soon and Kylie able to walk the stage at her graduation May 23.
"Whatever we can do to help the girls, we're going to be there for them," Shelton said.
Proctor was charged with DUI in May 2011, according to Montgomery County court records. She pleaded guilty in November 2011 to an amended charge of reckless driving.
