OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A dog named Charlie is recovering in Ottawa County, after he was found seriously injured in a field near the African Safari Wildlife Park.
Charlie was found with a large cut that runs from one ear to the other.
"Because of this wound being old, it could get very infected, it could be systemic, it could go throughout his body, we don't know, they're watching it very carefully," said Nancy Benevento-Brown.
Benevento-Brown says she believes Charlie is a victim of dog fighting, and that he has bite marks on his body.
Ottawa County Sheriff Steven Levorchick says dog fighting will not be tolerated in the county.
"Any type of dog fighting or any type of behavior like that would be investigated completely, and we would then speak with the prosecuting attorney's office and peruse criminal charges to the fullest extent of the law," said Levorchick.
The Danbury Township Police Department is currently investigating Charlie's case.
"I hope Charlie can make something good out of something really bad that happened. And, make people aware that this is unacceptable behavior and that you're not going to do this," said Benevento-Brown.
