(WMC-TV) - Most people associate the word strep with strep throat. But imagine a strain of strep with side effects so shocking and dangerous that it leads to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
Mid-South kids are actually catching OCD.
Kids who were once happy, healthy children are suddenly developing bizarre behavior.
Involuntary ticks and violent fits of rage are the dangerous side effects of PANDAS, a disorder brought on by strep.
Garrett Nass is 11 years old. He developed a tick after fighting an ear infection when he was 5 years old.
"Instead of his antibodies attacking the strep, it was attacking his brain, which was causing the OCD and the tics," said his mother, Catherine.
Hear from the parents of Mid-South children who have developed OCD suddenly. They want to share what can be done to help children sooner rather than later.
Tune in to an Action News 5 Investigators' special report, "The Kids Who Caught OCD" Monday at 10 p.m.
