TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
More than a decade has passed since Toledo City Council
rejected a zoning change request for the former Pilkington research center in east
Toledo to be converted into a charter school, and former council member Bob McCloskey has already
served his jail time for bribery charges. Now legislation before council calls
for the City of Toledo to pick up the tab for McCloskey's civil defense.
20 months in prison on state and federal bribery charges. The Michigan Development
Group, which wanted to take over the property, sued the city and McCloskey, but the city was cleared of civil liability in this case back in 2009.
However, Councilman Mike Collins says because that
decision was taken through the appeals process, the city should pay the $92,000
and close the final chapter on the McCloskey bribery scandal.
"All of the appeals that have come forward still with the
potential exposure for the city, granted it is a huge legal fee," Collins said.
"We indeed have a legitimate debt here and have to satisfy that debt because we
had exposure all along."
The measure will be presented to council on Tuesday
during agenda review and could be voted on as early as next week.
