Proposed redistricting upsets BG parents

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green parents are upset and concerned over proposed redistricting, stemming from the closing of one elementary school.

Parents say they are not only upset about the redistricting, but about the way the school board handled it.

"We had no idea that our children that were currently in a school would be moving," said Penny O'Connell.

Parents, teachers and concerned residents filled the school board meeting Tuesday night to speak their mind on the proposed boundary map.

"I'm concerned about our students," O'Connell said. "I'm concerned about the future of BG City Schools regarding how the board is handling situations and not being transparent about it."

The district will be closing Ridge Elementary, which they say is why they're redistricting. But the O'Connells say they weren't even notified that this would affect their children who attend Conneaut Elementary until last week.

"It's very frustrating when you've made choices and decisions in your life about where you want to live, and where you want your child to go to school, and then within the matter of – just a couple days ago, we get a phone call that says that choice is gone," said Brian O'Connell.

The school board will hold a special meeting next week to re-evaluate their redistricting.
