POV cameras keep public, cops on best behavior

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some Toledo Police officers have received new point-of-view cameras that clip onto their glasses to record while they patrol.

The department had been eyeing these glasses for the motorcycle unit for awhile. This week they rolled them out for nine officers.

The glasses can clip either to the frame of an officer's glasses, or to the helmet when patrolling on motorcycles. They record everything the officer sees, in HD. Departments across the country have implemented them, and have seen huge drops in reports of police misconduct and reports of physical force against police and civilians.

"The good thing about that is people tend to guard their behavior," said Lt. Mark King of TPD. "They kind of adapt the social norms when they know they're being recorded…Not just the public, but officers, too. So I think this device is a win-win for both the police department and the community we serve."

The department says they are hoping for a big impact, and they would eventually like to equip more officers with them.
