HOLLAND, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Pickleball is coming to the Village of Holland.
Pickleball is a racquet sport played with a paddle and smaller version of a wiffle ball. It combines badminton, tennis and table tennis. Holland Mayor Mike Yunker decided to bring the sport to the village after learning how to play while on vacation.
"The guy that taught me how to play was 80 years old!" Yunker said. "He would send me all over the place…It's becoming a more popular sport because it's able to be played by a variety of ages."
While fun, the game is also a great workout, which is what Yunker says is his goal in bringing it to Holland.
"It's gonna allow the community to come out and play a sport that's gonna be proving a lot of exercise for them," he said.
The mayor says the $30,000 price tag to construct a new double court at Strawberry Acres Park, as well as convert the existing tennis court, is worth the cost for the fun and health it will bring the community.
When the courts are done in July, the Toledo Pickleball Club will come to the park to teach others how to play.
