TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
For many people Memorial Day is all about opening the swimming pool, picnics, golf and long weekends.
But Memorial Day is supposed to be a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day following the Civil War. It became a national holiday in a Congressional Act in 1971.
When you read the names inscribed at the Veterans Plaza at UT, you realize that these are just ordinary people who were called upon to do an extraordinary thing. America is a wonderful, even magical place. But it is not magic that keeps you free.
I hope you take a moment this Memorial Day and appreciate all that you have because someone else was willing to give all that he had.
