Traveling to Cedar Point will become a bit easier as a portion of state Route 2 reopens. Many business owners in the area say this comes just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
SR 2 reopened Friday between Veler and West Krause roads after being closed since February for repair on the Crane Creek Bridge. The bridge sits near the border of Lucas and Ottawa counties.
Drivers are not the only ones who appreciate construction being finished. DG's Soft Serve Fast Food has been on SR 2 for more than two decades. The closing of the westbound lane directly affected their business. Owner David Moore says he is glad the road is back open because its closure impacted his business' bottom line.
"It was probably down 25 or 30 percent because nobody comes here. They blocked this off seven miles away," said Moore.
Owners at Phantom Fireworks agree SR 2 reopened just in time for the holiday weekend.
"Now that Route 2 is open - and I'm really happy that it is - we will get even more business on our way back from Cedar Point," said Cheri Junga, one of the owners at Phantom Fireworks.
More than 6,000 drivers cross the road every day. It's a steady stream of traffic that is welcomed.
"Anybody that wants to come out, come on out, because it is open, and it makes a big difference," said Moore.
The road will have intermittent lane restrictions through October.
