Netflix customers (especially parents) may get burned the next time they go to watch their favorite shows.
Netflix says they've recently chosen not to renew their contract with Viacom, which includes programming from MTV, VH1, Logo, Spike, and Nickelodeon.
The Nickelodeon loss is the one that many parents of young kids will notice. Users are losing some major kid-friendly content, namely Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, and Yo Gabba Gabba. Streaming Netflix on mobile devices is probably the most popular toddler diversion outside of goldfish crackers and peekaboo, so Netflix might get a little blowback from harried moms hoping to catch a shower break when they go to find their kids' favorite show is gone.
While this may not chafe adult streaming users, certainly parents with kids who love these shows are noticing, and sounding off about it on social media pages and beyond.
"As with everyone else here we are lost without Yo Gabba Gabba on Netflix to entertain our son. He does not care for my singing or his mothers dancing!!! Help us Brobee-wan-kenobi your [sic] our only hope," writes user Shaun on the official Yo Gabba Gabba Facebook page.
We contacted Netflix with our questions about the streaming changes. Here is the company statement in full:
At Netflix, we program for our members, we are selective about what titles we add to the service and what content agreements we renew. Since we can't license everything and also keep our prices low, we look for shows and movies that deliver the highest member engagement relative to its cost. We also put a big premium on exclusivity. For this reason, we have decided not to renew our Viacom content including the Nickelodeon titles. In recent months, we have brought exclusively to Netflix beloved Disney classics like Dumbo and Pocahontas, popular Cartoon Network [sic] like Adventure Time and just a few weeks ago we added great Disney Jr. titles like Jake and the Neverland Pirates.
