TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
It's the first time since 1996 that an automaker has challenged a federal recall order, but Chrysler is refusing a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration request to recall almost three million SUV's.
The controversy involves more than a million vehicles built in Toledo.
The NHTSA says the gas tank design in 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and in 2002 to 2007 Jeep Liberties is faulty and unsafe. Those Liberties were built at the Toledo North Assembly Complex on Stickney Avenue in Toledo. The Grand Cherokee models in question were made in Detroit.
Chrysler claims the vehicles use a commonly accepted tank design which is used in many other vehicles.
