MARGARETTA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sandusky Highway Patrol Post is currently investigating a serious injury motorcycle crash that occurred on SR 101 near Bardshar Road in Margaretta.  The crash happened around 6:35 p.m. on June 5.

Troopers say Daniel T. Gierlach, 55, from Avon, Ohio was driving a 1986 Black Honda Shadow 1100 southwest bound on SR 101, and failed to negotiate the curve at Bardshar Road. The motorcycle then went off the left side of the road, overturned, and Gierlach was thrown from the motorcycle.  It then hit a large garbage container.  The driver came to rest next to the motorcycle.

Gierlach was first transported to Firelands emergency room, then LifeFlighted to Mercy St. Vincent's emergency room in Toledo with serious injuries.  He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.  Alcohol and drugs appear to be a factor in this crash.
