MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A woman was killed Sunday night, after getting hit by a train on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks in Monroe Township.

She has been identified as 57-year-old Theresa Rook of Monroe, MI.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Rook was struck just before 10 p.m. Sunday. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train (BNSE) was traveling southbound, just north of Albain Road, when the Engineer saw Rook walk onto the tracks and lay down, according to investigators.

The train was unable to stop before striking Rook.

The train had two engines that were pulling 130 rail cars. It had just left the Coal Plant and was returning to Toledo.

Rook was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say it is unknown why she was lying across the tracks, but it appeared to be intentional.

The grade crossing is equipped with flashing signals and automatic gates, both of which were functioning at the time of the incident.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 734-240-7717.
