(WMC-TV) - "Welcome to the Germantown Greenway. For your protection, this parking lot is being recorded by video cameras."
This is what Germantown Greenway visitors hear upon entering the trail system. The goal of the new greeting is to reassure runners, walkers, and cyclists that they are safe.
The speaker within the camera allows people leaving their car behind to relax knowing that there is someone watching, but it also serves as a warning to those looking to stir up trouble.
The camera/speaker system serves as an interactive way of communicating that might even catch you off guard if you did not know it was there.
"I feel pretty safe. In the mornings, I wear my lights and blinkers. I don't have earphones in, so I'm real aware of what's around me," said cyclist Michael Block.
While Block appreciates the extra surveillance, he is not convinced it will prevent crime.
"Someone watching a camera doesn't necessarily guarantee safety. I suppose it will keep people away by deterrence, but I don't feel straight forward safer or less safe with the cameras," added Block.
Even though the camera is up for your protection, signs are still posted throughout the trail system reminding visitors not to leave valuables in their cars.
