MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - As kids all over the Mid-South enjoy their summer break, one Mississippi family is counting its blessings that they are able to spend this time together.

Gloria Nichelson from Moss Point, Mississippi appreciates each day with her son Caiden.

Caiden is a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the difficult times have made his family realize that every day is a gift.

"You do the best you can day to day, but the 'what if' is always there," said Gloria. "You hope and pray and trust though, day to day."

Caiden was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 6 years old.

"The initial shock of it was, I couldn't believe it. But you re-group and re-gather and do whatever you have to do for your child," added Gloria.

Their search for the best care brought them to St Jude.

Caiden has had two surgeries in recent years and a round of radiation. He has follow up appointments every six months.

"That takes a lot of stress off our shoulders, not having to worry about the financial aspect of care because St. Jude takes care of that for us," his mother explained.

And Caiden says the hospital staff makes the time at St. Jude a little bit easier.

"They're really nice and they're funny and stuff," he said.

Doctors continue to monitor Caiden's non-malignant brain tumor as his family celebrates every day they have together.

"The tumor will be with Caiden the rest of his life. Unfortunately, he will not be able to get rid of it, so he will be a patient at St Jude for a very long time," said Gloria.

She says the care her son is receiving would not be possible without the generous donations made through fundraisers like the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway.

You can help Caiden and other kids at St. Jude by purchasing a ticket for the dream home giveaway. All proceeds from the raffle will go toward providing care and finding cures for young patients.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-224-6681 or by visiting any Regions Bank, Ashley Furniture Homestore, or Stash. Raffle tickets can also be bought online, click here: https://waystohelp.stjude.org/sjdreamhome/redesign/dhForm.jsp
