TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Chrysler says it has resolved a dispute with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration by agreeing to inspect the 2.7 million Jeeps in question.
The vehicles include more than a million Jeep Liberty models built in Toledo, along with Jeep Grand Cherokee models made in Detroit.
The NHTSA had requested Chrysler recall the vehicles, saying the gas tank design in 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and in 2002 to 2007 Jeep Liberties is faulty and unsafe. Chrysler initially resisted the recall, before announcing the resolution on Tuesday.
Chrysler had argued the vehicles use a commonly accepted tank design which is used in many other vehicles. It also said the fatal accidents involving the vehicles were almost all high speed accidents in which a different design would not have made a difference.
