Swanton firefighters suit up with new, lighter gear

Posted: Updated:
SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Firefighters in Swanton now have a leg up when it comes to battling blazes.

The Swanton Fire Department has brand new gear. The equipment is lighter, which helps firefighters move more efficiently. Firefighters say it is also more durable, and has a moisture management system, which helps keep them cool.

Overall, the new gear will prevent fatigue and allow the crew to move faster and more safely. Firefighters say they've already noticed a difference.

"The boots are a lot more comfortable, the gear moves with the body," said Assistant Fire Chief Sean Griewahn. "It's almost like you're wearing regular clothes."

Funding for the new gear came from a federal FEMA grant worth more than $80,000.
