(Toledo News Now) -

It's often kept a secret, but it's one that can be deadly. Eating disorders continue to plague young women, and it's not a problem that's happening "somewhere else." It's happening here.

Just outside Toledo, a local clinic is seeing an uptick in the number of children battling their weight.

Social media can even play a role in encouraging negative body image and obsessive behavior. The National Eating Disorders Association says that "cultural pressures that glorify "thinness" or muscularity and place value on obtaining the "perfect body" can be a contributing factor.

Blogging network Tumblr and sharing platform Pinterest have earned criticism for the prevalence of so-called "thinspiration" posts on those sites, which encourage women to be thin.

Thursday night at 11pm on WTOL, Ashley James profiles a young woman who's battling an eating disorder and has since she was very young. It shines a light on the issues of negative body image and eating disorders... and just how common these problems really are.

Watch it with your daughter, or send this link to someone who might need it. It's an important story everybody needs to see.
