MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

La-Z-Boy broke ground Thursday on a new world headquarters, which will be located in Monroe.

The 200,000-square-foot facility will be a $50 million project, and will be constructed on 40 acres of land, purchased from the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The property includes an endangered Oak Savannah ecosystem, which will remain a nature preserve.

La-Z-Boy CEO Kurt Darrow says the facility will be built to the latest energy-efficient standards, and will feature a 3-story, glassed-in lobby with a view of the Oak Savannah.

"We want a more collaborative office, and we want an environment that can use technology, that really reflects the brand that we have today," Darrow said. "Our old facility has been great, but it is 86 years old and it looks it."

The company expects to move into its new headquarters in late 2014 or early 2015.
