TPS board to put 6.5 mill renewal levy on November ballot

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Public School board met Tuesday to approve a renewal levy to support funding on the November ballot.

At a June meeting, the TPS Finance Committee considered a presentation made by district administrators and agreed to bring forward a resolution to the full board. A 6.5 mill renewal levy was recommended for the November ballot and the board approved it during their Tuesday meeting.

On Tuesday morning, district officials and board members held a press conference to discuss the resolution and outline the importance of passing the funding request this fall. The renewal levy would generate approximately $13 million a year over a five-year period, which was originally approved by voters in 2008.

The district's current 5-year forecast projects negative balances starting in 2015. The forecast also assumes the renewal of the levy, which expires at the end of this year.

Passage of this renewal levy would allow TPS to continue moving forward with current initiatives, such as implementation of the transformation plan.

Interim Superintendent Romules Durant knows his role will be very important as the front man, meeting with many groups and individuals to stress the importance of this levy request.

"The community looks at you as the leader of this organization, and the more they see your presence - at the same time, being willing to come to their areas - they begin to realize your decisions are grounded, in regards to what needs to happen, for what's best for the community and these students," said Durant.
