Perrysburg Twp discusses fire levies early

PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Perrysburg Township trustees are determining when two fire department levies will go on a ballot.

The township fire department is looking to renew a 1 and 2 mill levy. Township officials were eyeing the November ballot for those levies, but ultimately, they decided to wait until next May.

The 1 mill levy will generate about $525,000, and the second, for 2 mills, will generate $915,000. All funds would go toward fire operations.

Fire Chief Tom Brice met with trustees to discuss the ideal time to bring the issue to voters. He says it's early to discuss a May levy, but wanted to make sure they're planning ahead.

So far this year, the township's fire and EMS have made 697 runs, and the fire department went on 121 of those. The money generated by the levies will be critical to maintaining the same level of service.

"It funds our day-to-day operations," Brice said. "So in order to get the fire trucks out the door, get the ambulances out the door to the scenes where they're needed, we need that money to guide and fund those operations."

Voters have been supportive of both levies in the past. Brice says he wants to get the word out early about how important a yes vote is for residents' safety.
