A local man noticed blood on his dog, and then saw the wound. Max was in his backyard when his owner believes he was shot by a stray bullet.

Max's injuries are not life-threatening, but he has to deal with some uncomfortable stitches for a couple weeks.

"Max was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Dr. John Lewton, Max's owner.

Lewton saw Max at the back door, begging to be let inside. That's when he notice blood on Max's thigh.

"When I got him in the house, I kind of separated the fur so I could see what had happened, and I saw a pretty big, ugly hole in his thigh," Lewton said. "Judging from the trajectory of the wound and the wound channel, somebody probably just shot one up in the air that happened to come down in my backyard where my dog was."

Lewton is a psychologist and is often hired by the city to work with the Toledo police and fire departments. He says it's common to see this type of activity around the Fourth of July.

"People shoot off their firearms on the Fourth of July and people see it on TV all the time," he said. "Folks shooting guns up in the air, and gravity says they're going to come back down."

Max will have his stitches taken out on July 5. In the meantime, he is a reminder to everyone to be safe.
