The Sandusky Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Thursday at approximately 2:10 p.m. The crash occurred on E. 2nd St.
The driver, 55 year old Stacy E. Kleinhans of Port Clinton, Ohio, was operating a 2001 Ford Windstar minivan westbound on 2nd St. Police say Kleinhans drove off the right side of the road just east of Fulton St. and came back on the road just prior to accelerating through the Fulton St. intersection. The car again drove off the right side of the road and struck two traffic signs, two small trees, and a trash bin. The car eventually struck a large tree and came to final rest. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Deputy Coroner. Also killed in the crash was the Kleinhans's pet dog.
Kleinhans was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, Port Clinton Police Department, Port Clinton Fire Department, and North Central EMS.
Police say alcohol/drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash. It is believed that a medical condition was possibly a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation at this time.
