The community came together Saturday night to help one of its own families; a family you got to know during CBS 3 Springfield's "Pay it Forward" campaign.
Last March, Tom Hartmann of Feeding Hills was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, affecting the bile ducts in his liver.
The father of three now has to travel to and from Boston multiple times a month.
With the expensive care and the loss of an income, the community pulled together to hold a fundraiser for the Hartmann family Saturday evening at the Polish American Club.
The family said the support they have seen is overwhelming.
"We have been in the town for a long time; we have three kids," said Wendy Hartmann, Tom's wife. "You know they have been in sports and cheerleading. We have an older one in high school, one in junior high, one in elementary. The teachers, the schools, I mean amazing support. It is breathtaking and very overwhelming."
For more information on Tom's specific type of cancer and to learn how to make a donation you can visit the family's Facebook page.
