A 19 Action News investigation has found, a woman running for Cleveland City Council is facing felony criminal charges, and she has past convictions.
Janet Garcia was just endorsed by the Democratic Party for Ward 14--an area on the city's near west side.
Records show Garcia interfered when Westlake Police tried to arrest a drunk friend. Now she's facing charges including assault on an officer.
But she considers herself a victim of racism.
"I came to the aid of someone in my community that needed my assistance," Garcia said. "I didn't assault an officer."
And in the 90's, we found Garcia was convicted in two drug cases. She says she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I have changed my life, and I have circled myself with positive influences. I believe in second chances," said Garcia.
Voters we met are not so forgiving, especially since City Council already has members who have been to federal prison and in trouble for drunk driving.
The election will be in the fall.
A trial on the assault charges may happen this summer.
