TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Dr. Cynthia Beisser, Deputy Lucas County Coroner, took the witness stand in the trial of two men accused of shooting and killing a Toledo 1-year-old on Tuesday.
Beisser performed the autopsy on 1-year-old Keondra Hooks, who was shot while sleeping on the floor at the Moody Manor Apartments in Central Toledo on Aug. 9, 2012. Her 2-year-old sister, Leondra, was also hit but made a full recovery.
On Tuesday, Dr. Beisser testified that Keondra died of a gunshot wound to the head. On cross examination, Beisser told the defense it is possible the bullet that killed Keondra ricocheted off of something before hitting her, because the bullet was deformed. Beisser later testified that although the bullet was deformed, the entry wound was consistent with a wound created by a bullet that went through glass, but was not ricocheted.
Also called to the stand was BCI firearms expert, Todd Warton. Warton said a 40 caliber handgun recovered while investigating an armed robbery in October was never confirmed to be used in that robbery. However, a witness said it was the weapon used in the shooting.
According to a detective, the gun was recovered on the 2900 block of Chestnut Street, a few blocks north of Moody Manor. Cartridges from the crime scene were examined and determined to be from that weapon. Still, Warton said the gun was missing a crucial piece: the barrel.
Antwaine Jones and Keshawn Jennings are facing murder charges in the case. James Moore, who police say was also at the scene the night of the shooting, took a plea deal and testified against Jones and Jennings last week.
