TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Wednesday, Toledo Mayor Mike Bell addressed concerns being raised about future water discounts for seniors.

In light of the State of Ohio making changes to its homestead exemption property tax breaks, to now impose income requirements for future applications, Mayor Bell says the city has no plans to make changes to its senior water discount policy, even though it's been tied to extending that discount to seniors who receive the state homestead exemption.

"There is no intention to change anything," Bell said. "Those discounts that are being provided will continue to be provided. Anybody that has any fear we're going to change something involving our water, they should put that fear aside."

The City of Toledo is implementing a series of water rate increases over the next five years to pay for improvements to the water treatment plant, and that rate structure builds in the senior discount.
