Catholic diocese calling on parishes to pray and defend religious liberty
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
A special mass will be held Thursday morning at St. John in downtown Cleveland.
Most Reverend A. James Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Cleveland, will offer a special Mass as part of the U.S. Bishops "Fortnight for Freedom" effort to pray and act to defend religious liberty in the United States.
The mass will be held at 10 a.m.
Bishop Quinn is standing in for Bishop Richard Lennon, who's out of town.
The Catholic Bishops of the United States have asked all dioceses and parishes to participate.
The church says this effort is particularly important because of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the federal government healthcare mandate that requires employers to pay for healthcare coverage, which violates the beliefs of a particular faith.
The government is requiring that Catholic Institutions pay for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception.
