A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
The Toledo Police Department says Timothy Bragg, a man who had been wanted on seven counts of rape and four traffic offenses, has been taken into custody.
"There was a lot of people out looking for him," said Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "I think he finally just realized there's nowhere he could go."
Toledo Police originally posted Bragg's photo and a description of his alleged crimes on their Facebook page on Friday. Nearly 20,000 people "shared" that post. On Monday, TPD again posted about Bragg, saying "Thank you to everyone who shared this photo. Because of your efforts, Timothy Bragg is now in custody."
Bragg had been wanted since the end of June.
"What makes this particular case even more crazy than the usual rape is that these victims were all children," Heffernan said.
Heffernan said police had received calls from some of Bragg's family, saying he was going to turn himself in on Monday. When that didn't happen, police found him at his grandmother's home on Bancroft and Elm.
Police are not able to say if the victims of the alleged rape were random, or if Bragg knew them. Police did say the crimes occurred in the Toledo area, starting in December of 2012.
"This is one of the worst crimes we have to deal with here in society, so we want to get somebody like that off the street," Heffernan said.
Thanks to the community's tips, Bragg is now behind bars.
"If we can get the message out to the people, about whatever it may be...It's so important, and we pride ourselves on working well with the media," Heffernan said.
