Donations still needed to complete local September 11 memorial

FULTON COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A piece of the World Trade Center has a new home in northwest Ohio. It was welded into place at the Fulton County Fairgrounds on Friday.

A September 11 memorial will soon be built at the fairgrounds. The memorial will include a walkway, roof, and plaques with a timeline and names of those who lost their lives that day. But the community is still working to raise enough money to build it.

"We've got it designed, so we can build it in stages," said Wauseon Fire Chief Rick Sluder.

Construction on the first phases will begin soon, but to make sure there's money for all of it, the president of the Wauseon Chamber of Commerce, Tim Sepesy, is organizing a fundraiser called "Wings over Wauseon."

"We're going to have wings and beer and motorcycles and music," Sepesy said.

The fundraiser is planned for the weekend of July 19, and Sepesy hopes it will inspire more donations.

"Now that they can physically see the memorial behind me, I think it will jog their memory and have them swell up with that passion and those emotions," he said.
