Restaurant Ratings Report: Vermin where you don’t want them

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The warm weather has brought insects and rodents to area restaurants. What eateries should you be cautious of?

The Village Inn on Holland Sylvania Road received 15 violations during its latest inspection. The Lucas County Health Department noted rust on food preparation tables, as well as new equipment added without the department's approval. That new equipment was blocking access to hand and mop sinks. Throughout the restaurant there are walls that need to be repaired, and there were flying insects in the kitchen. As for the food, the restaurant's spinach pies were almost a month old, and ground beef was being stored above shrimp.

There were nine violations at Sam and Charlie's White Hut on Central Avenue. Most notably, a cook was seen cracking eggs with gloves on and then handling toast immediately after, without changing gloves. There's build-up on doors and soda nozzles, and a lack of date-marking.

Build-up was also found at the Steak-n-Shake on Monroe Street, especially on door handles. The fast food restaurant received seven violations altogether. Others included electrical tape holding a sink faucet together and repairs needed for the floor.

That wasn't the only fast food chain with problems. Chick-fil-A on Monroe Street had dead flies in the kitchen, and ice, lettuce and tomato all checked in at unsafe temperatures.

A pest control operator needs to be called in for Ping On's Manhattan Boulevard location. Mice droppings were found under a food storage area. A lot of cleaning is needed under and behind kitchen equipment. The restaurant received five violations in all.

Two restaurants, however, came through their inspections violation-free: Subway on Secor Road and Hughley's on Locust Street.
