(WMC-TV) - The Action News 5 Investigators are getting action for people living on Berclair Road. Neighbors complained that an abandoned home on the street has been an eyesore for five years. Shelby County leaders are now taking action.
On the Fourth of July, neighbors called Action News 5 to complain about the high grass, collapsed roof, and overgrown backyard. The AN5 Investigators made a call to the county, and by Friday, work was being done.
"I'm so glad, so happy to see it," said Shama Ahmad. "It worked so quick."
While neighbors are pleased with some progress, crews were still locked out of the backyard, where an old pickup truck, speed boat, and shed are barely visible.
By Tuesday, having secured the legal authority to cut the lock, county crews cleared out the backyard. But the house is still rotting and neighbors would like to see it demolished for the sake of their property values.
While it is delinquent nearly $12,000 in property taxes, county officials say they would rather not knock down a house, regardless of its condition, without at least first trying to sell it to an investor.
The house on Berclair Road will be up for auction at a September tax sale. If no one buys it, the county will have a decision to make.
