SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Historic headstones were pushed over and broken as the Springfield Township Cemetery was vandalized. Officials say they are determined to find out who committed the crime.
The monuments and headstones damaged date back to the early 1800s.
"It's just sad to see people that disrespect, you know, a sacred area," said Public Services Director Mike Hampton.
Hampton called those responsible heartless, and says he takes the vandalism personally. He says they work hard to preserve the history of those buried in the cemetery – some were even Civil War veterans.
Thirty monuments and headstones altogether were shoved to the ground. Hampton says they will do their best to put them back together and preserve them.
"If we find out who did this, we're going to…prosecute them to the highest level that we're able to," he said.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of whoever is responsible for the crime. Anyone with information should contact the Lucas County Sheriff's Office.
