BLISSFIELD, MI (Toledo News Now) -

It's been nearly a year since two women and an unborn child were murdered in Blissfield, MI. Now, the community is coming together and setting up a memorial in their names.

Officials say sisters Amy Merrill and Lisa Gritzmaker, along with Gritzmaker's unborn child, were shot and killed by Merrill's ex-boyfriend inside their home on North Lane Street. Their mother was also injured in the attack.

A 5K memorial race will be held at Blissfield High School on Sunday, and family members say they think it's exactly how the sisters would have wanted their memory to be kept alive.

"They would be so ecstatic that everyone is still coming together and still remembers them," said Sarah Seman, the girls' cousin.

Seman says money from the 5K will go toward setting up a scholarship fund for seniors at Blissfield Schools, where both girls attended.

"[They were] two of the most amazing people I know," she said. "They were good, they cared about everyone, and they would want us to help the school they went to and give back."

Together the sisters leave behind five children. Family members say they miss Amy and Lisa every day, but say they're happy something positive can come from their tragedy.

The memorial race is Sunday at 9 a.m. For more information, visit their Facebook page here.
