Council to review senior water discount policy

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With the State of Ohio making changes to its senior homestead exemption policy, Toledo City Councilman Joe McNamara wants to make sure there will be no changes in the senior discounts given by the city for water, sewer and trash bills.

The city gives those discounts to those who receive the senior homestead exemption by the state, and the state is putting in new income restrictions for future homestead applications.

McNamara has drafted legislation to give all Toledoans ages 65 or older those discounts, regardless of income. Even though the Bell Administration has stated its intent to keep the senior discounts as is, McNamara says he wants to put a city policy in writing.

"Seniors have done a lot for the community, they helped build Toledo," he said. "They're on fixed incomes, so by providing this water, sewer and trash discount, that's one thing we can do to help seniors in this community."

The legislation will be presented to council on Tuesday during its agenda review session.
