Volunteers devote time to Marathon Classic

Posted: Updated:
SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania is gearing up for the Marathon Classic, which tees-off Thursday at Highland Meadows Golf Club, but some events are already underway.

Hundreds of volunteers give their time to make sure the LPGA tour runs smoothly, and coordinators say the show couldn't go on without them.

Roy Rozell has volunteered for the tour from the very beginning. For 28 years he's gotten up before dawn to drive the hour it takes to get to Sylvania, just to volunteer.

"It becomes like a family reunion," Rozell said. "[I] met a lot of people, had a lot of fun, and, you know, it's a wonderful, wonderful thing for northwest Ohio."

It costs $55 to volunteer. Volunteers get a shirt, a club house pass for the week, and an appreciation party, but those who pay the fee say it's also about giving back.

"It's a great event for the city," said Assistant Tournament Chairman Carol Gibbs. "It brings in a lot of money for charities, and so many children's charities have benefited from this tournament. It's an event! You come out here and it's a whole new world."

Gibbs has a full-time job, but uses a week's vacation to participate as an assistant chairman for the event. She's been a part of the tour for 20 years, and says she donates her time because it's enjoyable.

"We have fun when we're out here," she said. "It is stressful. It is a long week, but we also enjoy each other."

From the ages of seven to 90, those who volunteer work 4-hour shifts and they can always use extra help. To learn how to volunteer, click here.
