LPGA tournament has big impact on local economy

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Marathon Classic kicks off Thursday, and people are already rolling into Sylvania to see the best lady golfers in the world.

Organizers say this year could be even bigger than previous years with the new sponsor title. They expect 60-70 thousand people to turn up for the tournament.

Because of those visitors, the LPGA tournament has a huge impact on Sylvania's economy.

"It's all sorts of visitors that come in, and then we have golf fans of the LPGA that come in to northwest Ohio just to watch the event, and then, finally, volunteers," said Executive Director Judd Silverman. "We get volunteers from outside northwest Ohio that come for the whole week to volunteer their time."

Hotels, restaurants, and rental car companies stay busy. Silverman says the boost in business brings millions of dollars to the city.

"The convention and visitors' bureau talked about anywhere from 4-5 million dollars in economic impact in the past," Silverman said.

And with the new sponsor, Marathon, comes new features, including the Golf Channel airing the event live all four days. Sylvania will be advertised across the United States and to more than 160 countries.
