WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAVE) - Jack Hunter, the aide to U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky who has expressed pro-Confederate views in the past, has resigned, according to dailycaller.com.
Hunter told the Daily Caller News Foundation that he wanted to avoid being a distraction for Paul, who is considered a top potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate, and to clear his own name, which he says is now unfairly associated with racism.
Hunter has been under fire for comments critical of Abraham Lincoln and sympathetic to the Confederacy. The Washington Free Beacon reported that Hunter has a past as a pro-Southern secessionist.
"I've long been a conservative, and years ago, a much more politically incorrect (and campy) one," Hunter wrote in an email to The Daily Caller News Foundation. "but there's a significant difference between being politically incorrect and racist. I've also become far more libertarian over the years, a philosophy that encourages a more tolerant worldview, through the lens of which I now look back on some of my older comments with embarrassment."
Hunter told the Daily Caller News Foundation that he will return to political punditry.
