A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A Maumee doctor, charged with writing fake prescriptions, appeared in court Monday morning.
In November 2012, Barry Deran was charged with prescription drug trafficking. In January 2013, the U.S. Attorney's Office charged him with three additional federal counts for conspiracy, making false statements to obtain guns, and unlawfully dealing in firearms.
After searching Deran's home and office in February 2012, agents seized numerous prescription drugs, firearms and medical records.
According to the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy, Deran obtained prescription drugs by deception.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said between August 2010 and May 2011, Deran purchased 11 firearms from an Arizona-based Internet dealer and falsely identified the buyer as someone else to get them himself. Deran had been prohibited from possessing, using, obtaining or carrying deadly weapons by a Lucas County Common Pleas Court civil protection order.
Deran will be back in court Tuesday so a plea deal can be determined.
