CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The University of Cincinnati's director of public safety and chief of police has resigned.

Officials say Michael Cureton resigned from his role, effective July 23. Cureton spent 30 years with Cincinnati Police, rising through the ranks from patrol officer to Assistant Police Chief before landing the position with UC in 2011.

In a statement released Tuesday, Robert Ambach, Senior Vice President of Administration and Finance writes:

"On behalf of the senior leadership team, I want to thank Michael for his efforts on behalf of the university community.  I hope you will join me in wishing him the very best in his future endeavors."

Assistant Police Chief Jeff Corcoran will serve as interim chief of UC police, and Ambach will serve as interim director of public safety, until a new leader is appointed to the position.

Officer Corcoran has had a long career with UC Public Safety and has previously served in the role of interim chief.
