Springfield Twp. Fire Department turns to voters for funding

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Springfield Township Fire Department is losing revenue, so they're turning to voters to help keep their services going.

Fire Chief Barry Cousino says with the loss in revenue, along with the increase in costs, the department had no choice but to ask voters for a levy.

The department also needs to make capital improvements, which Cousino says they've been putting off because of the lack of funds. A levy would help pay for new roofs, windows, boilers and parking lots.

According to Cousino, the department has been able to operate within their budget for several years.

"We have not requested any new money in over 10 years, or in about 10 years," he said. "We just need to ask for money to continue with fire and rescue operations."

The fire department has a 1.3 mill levy up for renewal, but Cousino says in order to operate at the level they are at, they need to add millage to that levy. The township trustees approved the renewal with a 3.1 mill increase.
