TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Bell Administration is asking Toledo City Council for an additional $2.1 million for the renovation of Fire Station 3 and the construction of a new Fire Station 12 at Blair Park in north Toledo.

Fire Chief Luis Santiago says additions and renovations to the historic fire house at Erie and Bush will cost more than originally expected.

"We got a little deeper into it and contractors, as well," he said. "As far as maintaining the integrity and architectural design of that station building and after the analysis, it's going to cost a little more."

In the case of Station 12, he says it'll be expensive to build it from the ground up.

"We've had various soil borings to analyze the soil that we're going to be building the station on, and it does need some remediation."

The original budget for both projects was $4.844 million, but now the request is for $6.944 million. That's giving Councilman George Sarantou a case of sticker shock.

"It's a lot of money," he said. "The question is, why didn't they know about this when they submitted the plans originally?"

Funding for the measure is from the un-appropriated balance of the capital improvements fund, and Sarantou says council may have no other option than saying yes.

"It's not the easiest decision to make, but when it comes to public safety that's our number one priority."

Council may likely hold a committee hearing on the issue before taking a vote.
