United Way of Hancock Co. offering grants to ‘Halt Hunger’

HANCOCK COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The United Way of Hancock County has $200,000 set aside for charity groups and organizations to help put an end to hunger in the county.

According to FeedAmerica.org, one in seven residents in Hancock County struggles with food insecurity, which is described as having limited or no access to food, and not receiving proper nutrition. That's why the United Way established their ‘Halt Hunger' initiative in 2011.

Last year, they granted $138,000 to five groups as part of the initiative. This year, that amount has increased to $200,000, and the criteria have been broadened to include more innovative programs who can feed more people with less money.

Program organizers say knowing they are helping feed people in need is definitely worth every penny spent.

"Knowing that they got a meal today, that they didn't have to take that energy and that stress that impacts the family every day, and actually enjoy a meal and focus on the joys that life brings – that impact is more than you can put a dollar amount on," said Heather Hielman, the program grant coordinator.

The deadline for consideration for the program is Aug. 16. To apply for a grant, visit their website here.
