Henry County seeking funding sources for Napoleon bridge

HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The push to build another bridge over the Maumee River continues, even though proposed plans to build off Industrial Drive in Napoleon did not qualify for funding from Turnpike revenue.

Henry County officials say they're not giving up on the project and say they're looking for alternative sources of funding.

Both county leaders and community members say the bridge is needed.

"All the trucks are really getting tied up in Napoleon," said Patrick McColley, with the county's Transportation Improvement District. "There really isn't a good way through Napoleon."

Right now, truck drivers trying to get from US-24 to the Campbell's Soup plant have to drive through the downtown area and use the bridge on Perry Street, creating not only an inconvenience, but a safety concern, as well.

"I think it's very dangerous," said resident Kay Harmon. "They turn down on side streets. There are children riding bikes/walking."

The proposed project is expected to cost around $19 million. Between ODOT grants and local funding, around $7 million has already been secured. Now county leaders say they'll look to other sources to fill the rest of the gap.

"They're leaning more toward creatively financing them with multiple pots thrown into one instead of just a single source," McColley said.
