LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A new fee has been approved by the Lucas County
Commissioners to help implement a new solid waste management plan.
It's a $5-per-year fee for each improved parcel - any
property with a commercial, industrial or residential building on it.
Right now, recycling material collected in Lucas County
is sorted locally but then taken to a processing facility in Ann Arbor. As more
and more people are recycling, that's resulting in less being dumped into the
landfill, and has an impact on disposal fees charged to customers.
Part of the new plan includes building a recycling
material recovery facility in Toledo. That's expected to create 25-30 jobs, and
keep more than $500,000 a year in revenue in the county.
"That material recovery center will bring jobs from an
economic standpoint," said Lucas County Sanitary Engineer Jim Shaw. "We'll be
able to achieve economies of scale. We have enough recycling volume that
justifies the cost of a material recovery facility."
Shaw says the ultimate goal is lowering and possibly
eliminating those disposal fees. The new solid waste fee will first appear on
property tax bills in January.
