TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
The debate is heating up on Toledo City Council over the
request for an additional $2 million for the renovation of Fire Station 3 and
the construction of a new Fire Station 12.
The original estimate came in at nearly $5 million, but
on Friday the mayor's office sent a request to council asking for extra money
to complete the two projects.
Councilman Mike Collins says it's time to consider each
station project individually.
"I actually think we need to separate these two out," he
said. "This should be two separate pieces of legislation because we have
critical decisions to make."
Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson says these are
important public safety issues which need to be addressed very soon.
"The men and women that were in Station 3 are across the
river," she said. "If there's a response to any issue in North Toledo they have
to come across the river. It's a timing issue. We need to move forward and make
So far, a committee hearing on the issue has not been
scheduled. Hicks-Hudson is hoping a vote can happen in August.
