TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Business owners in an east Toledo neighborhood say the intersection of Starr and Dearborn is becoming a hot spot for crime and vandalism and they are fed up.
"It's progressively getting worse," said Carol Belknap. "The drugs are running rampant, the crime has gotten out of control. It's a scary area and it makes you sick because there are still some good east side homeowners here."
Belknap has been part of the community her whole life. Her family has owned Island Variety on Dearborn since 1947. She says she's appalled at what's happening in the area. Her business has been broken into several times this year, including earlier this month, and it was all caught on camera.
"One individual walked up to the window, broke the window with some glass, slid through the bars, came in and broke the glass out of the arcade game, grabbed whatever he could grab out of it, and went back through the bars," said Marvin Belknap.
The Belknaps say it doesn't end there. Shattered glass at one of their other businesses is a reminder of repairs that need to be made.
"It upsets me," said Marvin. "I mean, I get angry. But it doesn't do any good to get too angry because you only hurt yourself. You fix what you can fix and you go on."
And that's exactly what they have been doing to protect their family business, adding cameras and bars on windows to keep what's inside safe.
